A Night Out on the Town
Cartagena, one of the most beautiful cities in all of Colombia, is quickly becoming one of South America’s most vivacious destinations, rivaling cities such as Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, in terms of its culture and nightlife. Visitors looking for Latin flare, warm Caribbean waters and rich customs have truly found their playing ground in this stunning seaside colonial city.
Cartagena is filled to the brim with great nightlife, with anything from delicious and world-class cuisine, to fun cafes, bars, casinos and nightclubs. The city is divided into two sections, the Ciudad Antigue and the Ciudad Nueva, which both offer exciting restaurants and nightlife. The most popular areas of the city for heading out include the Street of the Arsenal, Carralito of Stone and the infamous Bocagrande.
El Centro, situated in the “Old City,” provides for about 80 % of the city’s nightlife and offers a wide array of bars and nightclubs. Here visitors can enjoy romantically old cobblestone streets lit by colonial style street lanterns, as they stroll from bar to bar. While in this area there are a couple of must stop places to grab a drink. Café del Mar is a favorite among tourists and locals alike. Try to make it in before dark to witness the beautiful sunset, while enjoying one of bars many great cocktails. Casablanca, on the other hand, is a bit more lively, offering a swinging dance floor and great balcony over looking the main plaza. Make sure to also check out La Tarzana, La Carbonera and Tonos Bar.
Boca Grande also offers some very entertaining nightlife. Situated close to the beach, this more modern and upscale area has a number of high-rise hotels, condos and apartments. Boca Grande is also home to the Cartagena’s most popular casinos. If testing your luck sounds like an enjoyable nighttime activity, head over to the Atlantis Casino, Perla del Caribe Casino, El Dorado Bocgrande Casino or the Royal Palm Casino. Afterwards, make sure to stop by Blas el Teso to grab a quick nightcap.

Fort San Jose
When the hustle and bustle of colonial Cartagena becomes too much, make sure to head out of the city and explore some of the areas nice beaches. Nearly surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, the areas just outside of Cartagena offer a number of nice beaches from the quiet and pristine to the livelier.
Within the realm of the city, the most popular beaches are those of Bocagrande and Laguito. Although still in the city, the beaches offer visitors the chance to enjoy the areas great bars, hotels, casinos and more. As you continue on just 25 minutes from the Old Walled city, you will encounter the beaches of Boquilla and Manzanillo. Although not white sand beaches, the area lacks the offshore coral reef conditions needed, the brown sand beaches are still lovely and offer beautiful turquoise waters.
If you are looking for something a little more than your average beach, head out to the island of Bocachica. This beautiful island offers its guests not only nice beaches, but also the chance to visit Fort San Jose. One of Cartagena’s oldest forts, Fort San Jose was used to protect the ancient city from bullion thirsty pirates. The beach on the island has great places to eat, pass the day away in a hammock or even enjoy a massage.
For a true Caribbean style beach, make your way over to Playa Blanca. Just south of Cartagena, this gorgeous beach holds up to its name-sake providing beachgoers tons of white sand, warm Caribbean waters and some very delicious restaurants.
The most beautiful beaches in the area are on the Rosario Island. The islands are situated just two hours by boat from Cartagena and provide a great day trip. These pristine beaches offer world-class diving, swimming, snorkeling and more.
When you have tired of city life and need to just sit back and relax, head out to one of Cartagena’s great beaches, you will not be disappointed.

Massive stone fortresses and towering walls, as thick as 20 meters, characterize the landscape of the colonial city of Cartagena. Founded in 1533 by Don Pedro de Heredia, this stunning city located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, was once a main target for English and French pirates, including the famed John Hawkins and Francis Drake, who were spellbound by the city’s massive wealth, and high quality commercial and slave trade ports. In fact, the city was so sought after that not a decade after its founding, the city experienced its first raid by the French Pirate Robert Baal.
As a result of all of the pillaging, and attacks, the Spanish crown decided the only way to save the city from massive attacks, was to build a huge wall and fort around the city. The walls of Cartagena were constructed in three phases, which started in 1568. Today, the walls protect the oldest areas of the city El Centro and San Diego and serves as a constant reminder of the city’s thrilling history.
The walls of Cartagena, were begun at the end of the 16th century, after the famed attack of Francis Drake, the vicious English pirate. The construction of the walls took over two centuries and they were finally in 1796, just 25 years before Colombia’s Independence. When visiting, make sure to take a stroll atop the walls at sunset.
Within the walls were a number of plazas, homes, jails and more. The area of Las Bovedas, today a tourist shopping area, was at one point a prison within the walled city.
Boca Chica is a small fort that guards the main entrance into Cartagena’s harbor. The fort was attacked a number of times during the 17th and 18thcenturies, but none were able to break through the walls.
The true gem of the Cartagena however, is Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas. This is the massive fortress was begun in 1533, and took over 150 years to build. Today, visitors can walk on its walls and through its underground passageways.
